Just a quick post. I noticed quite a few black and yellow caterpillars in the garden recently. I noticed them on some forget-me-nots that have sprung up next to one of the currant bushes. I have been keeping my eye on them in case they started to devour the currant bushes. However, even though the plants are touching they seem to prefer the forget-me-nots. I took a closer look today and found at least three on one plant. Having looked them up apparently they are scarlet tiger moth caterpillars (Callimorpha cominula) according to UK Safari and they are brightly coloured day moths. Comfrey is one of their favourite foods, which has recently sprung up in the garden. I'll have to have a look to see if there are any on the comfrey as well, but they certainly seem to like forget-me-nots.

The large pear tree has been in flower for a few days now. The first flowers opened on the 17 April and now they are nearly all open. It is making the garden look very spring-like. The flowers on the nearby cordon (Onwards) have just started to open on the 21 April - see below. Hopefully this might be just close enough to pollinate some of the larger pear tree flowers. There are a few flowers on the larger tree that have still to open so hopefully these will be pollinated by the Onwards tree. The flowers started to develop at the beginning of April and I captured the process in a time lapse video. Other trees in the garden are starting to develop flowers too. The sweet cherry fan is in flower and the acid cherry and apples have young flower buds. All of these flowers are making the garden a beautiful place to be at the moment. There are lots of bees and other insects enjoying them too. I'm also seeing an unexpected benefit of cutting down the huge Leylandii at the end of the garden - I now have a view of lots of different trees, half of which are in bloom too. It feels like a small woodland spread across all the gardens. Hopefully that's how it looks to the wildlife too.
I've got three rhubarb plants in the garden now since I divided one large plant last year. I've been forcing one of them using a large upturned plastic tub. I harvested that plant yesterday. I picked most of the stalks, leaving about 5 so that the plant can recover for next year. The harvested stalks weighed in at 1.3 kg - plenty for making a birthday rhubarb cheesecake!
With the warmer weather the garden is filling up with more and more wildlife. I came out into the garden this morning to see a red kite (Milvus milvus) flying low over the garden. Not long after two crows appeared and chased it off. Closer to the ground there is plenty of life too. There are hundreds of mouse spiders living in the mulch. There are lots of nursery-web spiders and garden spiders spinning their webs too. The nursery-web spiders are interesting - they look as though they are dead with their legs curled up, but as you get closer they spring to life ready to run away. Today was the first day that I've seen ladybirds this spring - two seven spotted ones and another with more spots, possibly a harlequin one. There are lots of bees about - mostly large bumblebees, but also honey bees and some mid-sized black bees. There are also some bee flies (Bombylius major) in the garden too - I have never noticed these before. They are very characteristic with their long proboscis. They are busy feeding on dandelion flowers and also on grape hyacinths (Muscari racemosum). I managed to photograph one whilst it had a rest on some bare soil by the newly planted asparagus.
It's difficult to be objective about how much wildlife is in the garden this year because I am paying more attention than last year. However, I think the amount of mulch in the garden has provided habitats for many species to overwinter. There are definitely a lot of spiders on the ground and I suspect there are a wider range of insects this year too. The weather has been warmer this week and the garden is springing back to life after a really cold winter. I've been keeping an eye on how the plants are doing, especially those that I planted last winter. It looks as though all of the trees are fine. The quince that suffered with the frosts last year is looking really healthy and is coming out into leaf. The established pear is nearly out in flower and the two cordons are showing signs of life. The buds on all of the cherry and apple trees are starting to break too. The Blue Pearmain apple I have growing as a cordon on one side of an arch looked like it had developed canker in a couple of places. I didn't want to take any chances with it spreading to the others so I cut it back to about 0.4m from the ground. The leaves are all coming out on the hazels and the new hawthorn. The mulberry tree still looks fast asleep, but it was slow to come into leaf last year too. The soft fruit has done quite well too. I had one failure - a loganberry I got last winter from a local DIY shop. I had planted it close to the fence on the east side of the garden. I think the spot was too shady and I had put too much mulch down. It was very damp and the bark had peeled off. I've replaced it with a healthier looking plant in a slightly sunnier spot. The other soft fruit plants (blackberry, blackcurrant, redcurrant, Japanese wineberry) that I put in last year have all come into leaf. I also took some gooseberry cuttings when I pruned the cordons I have. I just put the cuttings in a pot and left it out all winter. Three out of five of the cuttings have come back to life - I think I'll grow them on and plant them in the autumn. The herbaceous plants are doing pretty well too. I was really impressed with the salad burnet and the sorrel as these both stayed green all through the winter. The rhubarb is coming up thick and fast, promising the first big crop of the season. I'm forcing some under a big tub and it is almost ready now. The herbs are coming back - the lemon balm looks healthy and the mints are coming up but keep getting trimmed by the slugs. There is no sign of the anise hyssop - I hope it comes back as it is a beautiful plant, but it might be that it was too cold and wet over the winter. The chives and welsh onions also stayed green all winter, but died back a little. They are growing again nicely now. The comfrey has just come back up in the last few days. Also the asparagus plants I put in have all got shoots now despite the few days of frost after planting them. |
