I spent my bank holiday Monday walking in the woods near here. They look great at this time of year, with the beeches still coming out into leaf and lots of bluebells.

The mature woods are beautiful with the bluebells underneath, but it is striking how little grows between the ground level and the canopy. Where there are gaps or near the edges there were younger trees growing to fill the gaps.

Near to the edge of a large avnue I came across a log pile that had been covered with a layer of soil. On top was growing a big clump of garlic mustard. It reminded me of the hugelkultur technique that Emma Cooper wrote about in her last Forest Garden Friday post. It looked like the plants were thriving.

At the edge of the woods the hawthorn was just about to come into flower and the blackthorn was in full bloom.
