I managed to film a short timelapse of one of the caterpillars devouring a comfrey leaf last week:
With the warm weather the comfrey has shot up again in the two patches I have in the garden. One of the patches is home to several scarlet tiger moth caterpillars who are making short work of the leaves. I'm really pleased to see them back as I had a few in the garden last year. The mature moths are beautiful and unusual because they are brightly coloured and fly in the day time. For some pictures - see the post from June last year. I managed to film a short timelapse of one of the caterpillars devouring a comfrey leaf last week: The caterpillars have moved now. I spotted one of them looking well fed and sheltering under the branch of a blueberry bush. 2 Comments Just a quick post. I noticed quite a few black and yellow caterpillars in the garden recently. I noticed them on some forget-me-nots that have sprung up next to one of the currant bushes. I have been keeping my eye on them in case they started to devour the currant bushes. However, even though the plants are touching they seem to prefer the forget-me-nots. I took a closer look today and found at least three on one plant. Having looked them up apparently they are scarlet tiger moth caterpillars (Callimorpha cominula) according to UK Safari and they are brightly coloured day moths. Comfrey is one of their favourite foods, which has recently sprung up in the garden. I'll have to have a look to see if there are any on the comfrey as well, but they certainly seem to like forget-me-nots. |
