I've managed to get away for a couple of trips this summer, each of a week long. The garden has hardly noticed my absence. There has been plenty of rain that has stopped the small number of pots from drying out (mostly blueberries). The polytunnel coped ok with the doors left open at night and 30 minutes of watering through irrigation hose at ground level underneath the tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and peppers. The other side manged ok getting lots of watering before I went. On returning from the first week away most of the harvest was courgettes and cucumbers from the polytunnel, plus a few tomatoes and climbing french beans. The forest garden yielded lots of Japanese wineberries, some blackcurrants, blueberries and a few pears. After the second week away things have changed a little. The polytunnel is still producing lots of cucumbers and the tomatoes are accelerating. Outside the hazelnuts are going brown and I've started to pick them. I try to pick them a little early and dry them inside to beat the squirrels to it. I picked about 3 kg yesterday and there are still lots more to be picked. I picked the remaining pears, which haven't done very well this year. By contrast there are lots of apples in the garden. For each variety there are typical times for picking and storage in the books. My early Redsleeves tree was even earlier than the recommended picking time. It seems as though the others are ready earlier too. For example, the Court of Wick apples are supposed to be ready for picking in late September, but come away easily now when lifted up. I've picked a few, but am slightly nervous about picking them so early. They keep until October to December so I don't expect to be able to tell from the flavour whether they are ripe yet. Most of these are in good condition and look as though they will keep well. In general the apples have suffered from Codling moth quite badly. Many of the fruit have holes in. The tree that I grafted in 2011 with Egremont Russet and Merton Russet now has a good crop of both. Some of these have fallen off while I was away. Both varieties again have a later picking date according to the books. I picked some of the Egremont Russet yesterday as they came off easily. About half looked as though they will keep, others look too holey. Many of the apples have woodlice in holes in them too. I'm not sure if this is because of the Codling moth holes or from bird damage. I probably will slice and dry the ones that won't store. The Blue Pearmain apple is a really interesting one. I have a double cordon of this and the largest fruit are enormous, but it also has some very small ones too. Some of these have holes in too so I have picked all of them to see if the good ones will ripen inside. nest year I'm going to experiment with pheremone traps as I've heard positive things about them from friends. Late August harvest from the forest garden. From 12 o'clock, cucumbers, courgettes, tomatoes (from the polytunnel), Onwards pear (centre), Concorde and unknown pears (1 o'clock), Nottingham cobnuts (3 o'clock), Egremont Russet and Court of Wick apples, Kentish cobnuts (9 o'clock) and Blue Pearmain apples (11 o'clock).

About a month ago I unearthed the first of the mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum) tubers that I had grown for the first time this year. The few frosty nights had killed off the greenery and it was clear there wasn't going to be much more growth this year. I pulled up the first plant somewhat nervously, not sure whether there would be much to show for a season's growth. I shouldn't have worried though because the ground was absolutely full of perfect white and purple tubers. The tubers were all close to the surface and near to the base of the climber. They varied in shape from almost round to elongated parsnip shapes. The taste of the tubers is unique. Fresh they are tasty and have a spicy radish-like flavour. Roasted the flavour becomes much milder. They go well with other roast vegetables and found a place on our table for Christmas lunch. Their skins are quite thin and they don't seem to need roasting as long as some other vegetables.
I left a couple of tubers in the ground to see if they would over-winter, but I took most out and will keep some for planting in the spring when the soil warms up. In total the two plants I grew (each from a single tuber) both yielded a similar amount totalling 4.245kg. Not bad for a an easy to grow climber with attractive edible leaves. I also harvested the two Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) plants at the same time. They were also really productive. I filled a great big bucket with their tubers weighing in at 6.205kg! As the days shorten and the end of summer is in sight, the garden is still looking lush and green after all the rain. It has felt pretty quiet in the garden recently with not much to do but enjoy being outside. I've been filming a time lapse of the garden since February and just finished the first six months. I'm pleased with the results. I've only missed a day or two in that time. Here are the first three months which show the dramatic change from winter to spring. The next three months aren't as dramatic but capture the steady growth over the summer. There is so much going on that I focussed on the section around one of the apple trees (Tydeman's Late Orange) to show it developing from February right through to August. You can see it blossom just after the pear trees next to it, then it comes into leaf before the fruit develop and swell up. The garden is starting to need a little attention at the moment to keep up with harvesting. Autumn fruiting raspberries are producing a moderate but welcome supply of fruit. Apples on the existing tree at the end of the garden are ready now, although they improve a couple of weeks after picking. They are starting to drop off the tree now so need picking. The nematode treatment I used last year for codling moth has made a difference. There are less magotty apples, but there are definitely still quite a few. The imperfect apples don't keep as long so I have been juicing some of them. The hazelnuts are just about ready too. The husks are turning brown and the nuts too. There is still lots of salad leaves and the nasturtiums are in full bloom as well as the mashua which is grown all over the sour cherry tree. The non-perennial courgettes are still producing daily and I harvested the first of my Desiree main crop potatoes today. I dug up a couple of plants to find more than 6 kg of enormous spuds.
I've got three rhubarb plants in the garden now since I divided one large plant last year. I've been forcing one of them using a large upturned plastic tub. I harvested that plant yesterday. I picked most of the stalks, leaving about 5 so that the plant can recover for next year. The harvested stalks weighed in at 1.3 kg - plenty for making a birthday rhubarb cheesecake!
